I’ve just started a new job where my main responsibility will be to build dashboards and reports for senior management, as well as develop a KPI framework. The company operates in the industrial sector.
The reporting will be implemented in Microsoft Power BI, which I’m already comfortable with. However, in my previous role I mainly worked with data coming from SAP. In this new company, SAP isn’t in place yet—the implementation will only start in about 12 months and is expected to take 5–6 years.
So I’ll likely be dealing with a less structured data landscape for a while.
My questions:
How would you approach starting a new role like this?
What are the first things you would focus on or ask about?
What would you set up early on (tools, processes, documentation, etc.)?
Any general tips for ramping up effectively in a new BI/analytics position?
I’d appreciate any advice or experiences, especially from people who’ve worked in environments without mature data infrastructure.
