Sharing in case it helps anyone avoid a bad experience like the one I had.
I saved up credit card points for a long time in order to pay for a 2 night stay at El Silencio in Bajos del Toro. Unfortunately, the trip was completely derailed by food poisoning my first morning there. I had already been in Costa Rica for a week with no issues at all, but in the couple hours after breakfast I got extremely nauseous followed by a really rough bout of food poisoning.
When I called down to reception after I fell ill, they just told me that they don’t carry medicine and couldn’t help me. They never checked in again after that. I was left to fend for myself while violently ill for the next 24 hours.
When my fiancee went down to get herself some dinner, they pretty much forced the soup of the day on her for me to eat, even though I wasn’t even able to keep down water. And they charged us for it! Which felt wrong especially given how overpriced the food is to begin with.
When I reached out to them after my stay to let them know about the food poisoning, they acknowledged it and simply said they looked forward to welcoming me back…a very weird response. I followed up with them and Relais & Chateaux and never heard back again. All in all a terrible experience, service, and a complete waste of money (or credit card points). Save yourself the illness and money and stay somewhere else!
