Everyone on my committee is very nice and personally supportive. I do not have anyone who i feel is intentionally trying to sabotage me. However, I do feel I am being sabotaged to a certain extent by their absolute lack of engagement.
My university has a hard cut off, when students are removed from the program if they have not defended by that date. I received an extension on this as I became disabled (MS) during my program and now need accommodations that I never expected I would need during the my years in the program. However, that extended deadline is now soon approaching and I risk being forced to leave without a PhD (I have a job lined up that requires PhD in hand).
My committee does not give timely feedback, often over doubling (or more) what is written in the university rules on feedback timelines. Often do not read my emails at all, and cause me to miss important deadlines (not getting signatures in on time for disability paperwork etc. despite many follow ups).
When they do give "feedback" it is vague and never constructive. So I never know what I need to do to "fix" it. When I ask for more clarity they usually send me to someone else on the committee, who in turn does the same thing. No one can tell me what is actually wrong with my chapter, just that it is wrong. So I have no idea how to fix it.
I will not make my extension deadline unless things change very quickly. I am not able to work quickly (disability related) so I need to work efficiently .... it feels like trial and error of rewriting the same thing again and again hoping it will satisfy their mystery complaints.
Chair is on my committee so there is no one I can complain about this to. He is a major part of the problem. Also complaining will not serve me (power dynamics).
I'm curious what kinds of supervision and feedback from your committee you get. I am social sciences (no lab). How constructive and active is your committee in your research and progress?
