My partner and I became permanent residents in December 2024 and will become Australian citizens on 21 May 2026 (ceremony booked).
Our first baby is due early July 2026.
I’m trying to understand eligibility for Government Paid Parental Leave (PLP), specifically the Newly Arrived Resident’s Waiting Period (NARWP):
- I understand PLP has a 2-year NARWP that generally must be met before the child’s birth
- However, Services Australia says you may not have to wait if you’re an Australian citizen
My question:
If we become citizens before the baby is born, but haven’t yet reached 2 years as permanent residents, would we still be eligible for PLP?
Or does the 2-year requirement still apply regardless of citizenship status at the time of birth?
We’ve lived in Australia since 2019 and meet the work and income tests.
Thanks in advance!
