This was found on the day of our move in. Initially it was presented as a hole in the floor felt through the carpet.

I didn't investigate until around 5 days later (moving in etc)

The wetness was just concentrated to that particular area, it had spread but not much further than 3 joists.

Removed the joists that were sodden and repaired the others and replaced the flooring too.

When pulling back the carpet there was a lot of mildew that has spread throughout the underlay and it is sometimes noticeable through smell.

It is a 1900s house, solid walls build.

I'm just curious to know if anyone has experienced something like this? A friend of mine who helped repair the joists and flooring is a builder and he himself could not figure out what the cause was, underneath the flooring where the wetness was there were no pipes, no holes in the exterior, nothing that could indicate this much dampness.

Only one air brick in the external of the house which is clear.

I'm worried this will happen again and given the mildewy smell I'm worried my floor is not breathing enough.

Any suggestions?

TIA
