My mother was scammed by a blacktop company.
Hello, my mother was just scammed by a blacktop company. It was a company that claimed to have just finished doing a neighbor's blacktop (a neighbor they mentioned by name) and said that they had some leftover and would not mind doing a small space for my mom. My mom trusted their word and signed a payment slip that had yet to be filled with square footage estimate or a price estimate. They were going to talk pricing and sq footage AFTER they came back with the "extra" black top.
Admittedly, she was stupid for signing the slip before any pricing was put down, I told her as much, but because they knew our neighbor's name she felt they were trustworthy.
Turns out, it was NOT extra, they brought three truckloads and applied the first truckload in two hours (she was able to stop them before they did two more truckloads). As to why she didn't stop them earlier: she works during the day, and was waiting for them to come back.
In the 20+ years she has owned her property, she has NEVER gotten black top because it was too expensive, we typically go for gravel, she figured the "leftover" would be enough for a parking space.
They ended up doing more than 7,000.00$ of black top without my mother's consent, despite her signing the workman slip before discussing square footage and pricing. What can be done (this was done in PA,USA)?
She is planning on contacting police and trying to withhold payment for as long as she can.
