Hey guys, I’m in a band called Dirty-930 from Minnesota. We’re somewhere in the emo / pop-punk lane.

I’ve been really influenced by bands like Title Fight, Modern Baseball, Tigers Jaw, and earlier stuff like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral. That sound is honestly what made me want to start a band in the first place.

Lately though, I had a weird experience at one of our shows that’s been bothering me.

After our set, this guy came up to me and my band and basically told us our show sucked, called us “posers,” and said our music is an insult to emo. He specifically singled out one of our songs, “Moon,” and said it was a joke of an attempt at emo.

The thing is, I wrote that song during one of the lowest points in my life. It’s one of the most real and personal songs I’ve ever made. I’m not trying to force labels onto anything, but to me it FEELS like an emo track.

We’ve never really had negative interactions like that before, so it caught us completely off guard. I just don’t get going out of your way to tear down people you don’t even know.

So I guess I’m just wondering, what does “emo” even mean to you at this point? And what actually makes someone a “poser” in this scene?

Because right now, I’m just confused more than anything.
