Better education + corrupt band
I want to do something for my band, especially for the family’s who the band treats poorly because they think they’re better or deserve more. I am tired of the corruption, I’m tired of seeing my grandmother suffer because our band doesn’t like our family. This is not okay. They need to be audited and so many of the counsel members definitely need to be let go. I think maybe it’s time the younger generation gets a chance to be apart of it. We still have the same old people from 20 years ago who were already let go for signing $ off for themselves yet REHIRED. I am currently furthering my education but I don’t know how to go about getting involved with my band. There needs to be a position where somebody who is completely unbiased with access to band funding with a say into where the funding goes while also stopping anyone from writing their own endless cheques. Has anyone done this before because they themselves have noticed something wrong within their own community? I’m honestly so tired of it and something needs to be done. I’m also sick of hearing from people, especially Canadians that all natives get is “handouts” when that is just not true, at least for the families who aren’t within the immediate family/friends of chief and counsel. It’s not okay for them to be writing themselves cheques all the time or saying they purchased said amount of items for the community when in reality they take half of those items and give it to themselves. I know a lot of this because my sister has children with a current band counsel member/former chief counsel who sometimes lets things slip. I notice that when we get community fish or anything like that he gets way more, better quality but we get the 💩 end of the stick. This is why other races treat us poorly because our own people can’t even take care of us they just take care of themselves and use the leftovers to say they’re “helping”. All I heard and still do this day hear is we get free $ when the reality is no, our band counsel, chief and their family get all the $ but we get nothing AND racism. I mean how do you defend yourselves knowing your own people are corrupt? They are making it difficult for us as an entire race because I know this doesn’t just happen in my community and I’m over it. Something needs to be done and I am going to make a change. I just need direction.
