Confusion re: Pet vs Human Meters

I currently use the Alphatrak3 for my boy, but have been reading about different kinds of meters because the supplies for this are quite expensive.

I keep seeing discussions about whether to use a meter calibrated for humans over a pet-specific meter and I am thoroughly confused about this.

In my mind, an inch is an inch. A yard is a yard. A mile is a mile.

And mg/dL is mg/dL. Why would 80 mg/dL mean one thing on one kind of meter and 80 mg/dL on a different kind of meter not be the same? What is the point of the unit?? The point of the unit is that is a standardized form of measure?! I feel like I am taking crazy pills!

What am I not understanding here?
