I am a 19 year old male from Atlantic Canada. I want to become a police officer but I’m not sure if I want to become a cop at 20-21 years old. I have a massive travel itch and a massive “I need money” itch, with a strong desire to avoid being in debt as much as possible. I’m currently in contact with my local police force and going through their sponsorship program, which if accepted, would send me to the police academy with a guaranteed job immediately after graduation.
I’ve been told that 19 is really young to become a police officer, and that most applicants in the sponsorship program are 24-26 years old. Multiple people I know have suggested that I try to find a fly-in fly-out job wherever I can to work and get some real money in my pocket. I am 6’1, in good shape and very physically active through weightlifting and playing rugby so hard working conditions aren’t a problem for me. My problem is that I have no experience in any trades because that area of work was never presented as an option for me growing up.
Any advice would be helpful.
