Would it be useful for me to see an endocrinologist?
Hello,
I’m a 28-year-old woman with regular periods. I have never taken the pill or used hormonal contraception. I have a boyfriend, and we use condoms every time we have sex, which works very well for us.
I was experiencing some unusual symptoms (gingivitis and severe migraines) before and during my periods, so I was prescribed a hormonal blood test.
Some of my results came back abnormal: testosterone, prolactin, and androgen hormones are slightly above the normal range. Everything else, such as insulin and thyroid levels, is normal.
My periods are regular. I occasionally get a few pimples on my face, and I have some hair under my chin and on my neck, but nothing excessive.
My weight is stable and below average for my height. I read that it’s possible to have PCOS even without weight problems, so I thought I should mention that.
I was wondering whether it would still be a good idea to see an endocrinologist. Appointments are very expensive, and if it’s only for them to tell me to go on the hormones pill, then there’s no point because I don't want to take it as a personal choice.
The gingivitis and migraines have improved over the past two cycles, so apart from the hair growth and my terrible hair quality (although I do dye my hair so idk), I don’t really have many symptoms.
Would you still recommend that I see a specialist? Thank you very much!
