I was searching for a new job, and came across a “marketing agency” that advertised that they do paid training, no degree or prior experience needed. At the moment, I am desperate for income and decided to apply. I had 2 interviews, and was granted a position. However, after pondering on the interview process and some of the details that were shared regarding others in the business, I have a feeling that this agency may be engaging in fraud.
During my interview, there were very little details regarding what the actual sales and marketing would look like. However, I was told that I would be making an hourly rate + commission based on “units sold”. The interviewer also claimed that an employee made over $3000 in one week. I was informed that I would be pushed to train others to do what I did. The agency claimed they are partnered with 2 well known companies, a telecommunications company, and a retail/grocery company. After my interview, I drove over to the retail store (at which the agency claims to have in-person marketers) and asked to speak to a manager or supervisor regarding the agency. I listed the name and shared some of the general things I was told in the interview. The employees looked at me very confused and claimed they had no such connection or partnership with the agency that I named.
I am supposed to fill out a background check, and speak to the interviewer this evening on the phone. If this is a pyramid scheme, what actions could/should I take? I don’t generally snitch, however I feel a slight obligation to inform law enforcement of potentially fraudulent activity.
Any advice would be appreciated.
