How did the American public respond to Supreme Court cases like Heart of Atlanta?

Obviously, the United States was extremely racist in the 1960s. I'm interested in learning about how the general public in America responded to cases like Heart of Atlanta and Katzenbach, specifically about how they used the commerce clause to support the constitutionality of the Civil Rights Act. Thank you in advance for any response.

Edit: I realize public is extremely broad, but I’m interested in both legal scholars and laymen. Really, any notable opinions.
