Why do many commentaries of the Bhagavad Gita diminish and look down upon murti and devatā worship?
i'm reading Swami Mukunandana's commentary, and although I appreciate that it acknowledges that no teacher holds the right to say they have ultimate truth and the only correct commentary, this goes down the toilet when he looks down upon devatā worship.
I look at devatā worship as a way in which one can realize the ultimate. However, this and other commentaries look at it as a mere waste of time for people merely seeking material benefit when it many cases it's not the motivation behind it.
How do you deal with this?
