10k steps - does it matter how and when?

This is probably a stupid question but I’m just starting out and wanted to know whether it matters that we do 10k steps throughout the day or at one given point, and whether that makes a difference? Walking is one thing I’m able to do without being lazy atm, and wanted to know whether the quality and intensity of it matters.

For instance if I’m walking to work and back from work, as opposed to if I’m going for a walk in one go from 7pm to 9pm or something and I’m maintaining a pace, etc. Has anybody seen any differences?

I sometimes don’t have time to go on a walk after work, but obviously doing something is better than absolutely nothing. I wanted to know though on days that I’m walking as part of my day, as opposed to doing the walk as a standalone activity, should I just rather do something else entirely?

Would both still be effective?

Thank you:):) Please don’t be mean:):)
