Maria Lewis Killed Feb 2026; Mesa PD recommends felony charges as to Dulance Morin in March 2026; MCAO sends back for further investigation April 2026

Maria Lewis, 32 and a married mother of seven children, apparently arrived home from her DoorDash shift smelling of alcohol in the early morning of Saturday 2/28/26. Documents state that she had a confrontation with her husband (perhaps he was upset she had been driving under the influence) around 2:00am, which led her to leave the home in a state of anger. She then somehow alighted upon a neighbor’s front door and began banging and yelling, for reasons that aren’t fully clear.

This neighbor, Dulance Morin, a married father and special agent with the Attorney General’s Office, was awoken by his door being banged and yelling outside (which he thought sounded like a man’s voice) in the middle of the night. Mr. Morin’s wife called 911 given the disturbance at 2:44 a.m. waking up everyone in the home. It is then stated that Mr. Morin got dressed, obtained his firearm and approached the door, which he claims was being violently jostled causing the deadbolt to move (no damage to the door was observed by reporting officers that morning). He then told Ms. Lewis to leave, yelling that he had a gun and would use it if someone tried to enter.

Ms. Lewis apparently responded she was armed as well, and one of Mr. Morin’s children heard this statement.

At some point shortly thereafter, Mr. Morin’s gun was discharged and Ms. Lewis perished. Only one casing was found; it is not clear if additional rounds were spent.

Ms. Lewis’ husband told the tv news a much different account: he didn’t mention any fight between he and his wife, and simply noted she was a night owl who frequently went for late night/early morning walks during the weekends. A friend of the deceased stated similarly—she walks at night in the safe neighborhood often (although rarely that late).

It is unclear why Ms. Lewis alighted upon this specific neighbor’s home; there is no medical confirmation as to whether she was under the influence that night, had any issues with drinking or anger management, or what exactly prompted her to reportedly engage in such strange behavior. It is also unclear what occurred in the moments before Mr. Morin shot his gun.

Mesa PD investigated for a couple weeks and recommended felony charges on 3/13/26, however MCAO sent the case back for further investigation. The documents mentioned above were obtained by the AG’s office but they’ve recused themselves from the formal investigation given the conflict of interest. I presume they simply spoke to Morin and his family, but it is curious the discrepancy between Lewis’ husband statements in their documents (about the alcohol fueled fight) vs what he told the news (mother out for a typical 2:30am weekend walk).

If anyone has any additional information about this case I would be curious.

From what I have read this seems like a justifiable killing but there is a lot to flesh out. The fact police referred for felony charges after two weeks of investigation is stunning. Makes me think there is significant information in the doorbell camera that sheds Morin in a less than favorable light.
