WA or TAS for graduate Digital Technologies teacher?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently a pre-service teacher in Victoria, and my teaching specialisation is Digital Technologies.
In my course, I have noticed that quite a few people are also studying this specialisation. However, even though I often hear that Digital Technologies teachers are in demand, when I look at current job vacancies, I don’t actually see many positions specifically advertised for Digital Technologies teachers.
I have also heard that some people study one teaching area but end up teaching other subjects once they start working. I’m wondering how realistic this is for a graduate teacher. Is it common for schools to hire graduate teachers and then place them in subjects outside their main specialisation? For example, could a Digital Technologies graduate reasonably get work teaching general ICT, junior maths, science, business, or other subjects depending on the school’s needs?
I’m also considering moving to Western Australia or Tasmania after graduation. My main priority is finding a teaching job as soon as possible.
For teachers who have worked in WA or TAS, I’d really appreciate your thoughts on:
- job opportunities for graduate teachers, especially in Digital Technologies or related areas
- whether schools are open to graduates teaching outside their specialisation
- classroom behaviour and student engagement
- workload and expectations for early-career teachers
- teaching culture/style in WA compared with TAS
- whether regional or rural schools offer better chances for graduate teachers
Any advice, personal experience, or honest reviews would be really helpful.
Thanks so much!
