Hi all,

Looking for some honest opinions before I get pushed into paying for something that might not actually be my issue.

I live in a converted top floor Victorian flat (UK). The tenants downstairs have just moved out and there are builders in doing cosmetic work. They’re now saying there’s a leak coming from my flat into theirs.

I went down to look and the ceiling has some light brown staining, but nothing dramatic. No obvious dripping, no bubbling paint, nothing that screams “active leak” to me.

I’ve also spoken to the tenants who were living there up until recently and they said they never noticed any leaks or water coming through from our flat during the time they lived there.

So I’m a bit stuck:

- If this was an active leak, wouldn’t it look worse than just light staining?

- Wouldn’t the previous tenants have noticed something?

- Could this just be old/historic staining that’s being blamed on us now the place is empty?

The agency is already hinting that we may be liable for repairs, which I’m obviously trying to avoid if this isn’t actually coming from our flat.

Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated
