Finance Interview Advice
Hi everyone
I know a lot of people here are currently going through interviews in finance / consulting, so I thought I’d share something that might be useful.
One way to stand out is by bringing a more forward-looking, analytical perspective when you’re discussing a company in interviews.
Here are a few things you could think through:
- Is revenue recurring and predictable, or more one-off in nature?
- How strong is customer retention, and how easy is it for customers to switch?
- Is the product/service essential or discretionary?
- Does the company operate in an attractive market with some form of moat (brand, network effects, etc.), or is competition intensifying?
- Does the company have real pricing power, or is pricing largely market-driven?
- Is growth organic or acquisition-led?
- How diversified is the customer base, or is there concentration risk?
- Is there exposure to higher-risk geographies?
- How exposed is the business to volatile or uncontrollable input costs?
- What external trends could support or pressure growth / margins in the near and longer term?
At a high level, it’s about building a forward-looking view on how sustainable a company’s financial performance is.
