Title: Friend got stopped at US airport, CBP questioned him about me after seeing a message — should I be worried?
Hey everyone, I’m kind of stressed and could really use some insight.
I’m a dual Canadian/Iranian citizen living in Toronto. My friend (also dual citizen) flew to the U.S. today and got sent to secondary inspection at the airport. CBP went through his phone.
Apparently they found a screenshot of a message I sent him a while ago. It was a really dumb and pretty vulgar/offensive joke (nothing illegal or threatening, just immature and in bad taste — I regret it). The officer asked him a few questions about me and then asked for my phone number.
After that, the officer somehow pulled up my full name and photo and asked my friend if that was me. My friend said he wasn’t sure / hasn’t seen me in person.
From what he told me:
- They only asked a few questions about me (like 2–3)
- Then they moved on and focused way more on his ties to Iran
- He doesn’t think they saved anything from his phone
- He was eventually allowed through
Now I’m worried about a few things:
Did I just get “flagged” in some system?
Will this affect my future travel to the U.S.?
I wasn’t present, wasn’t contacted directly, and this was just a private message between friends (no threats or anything like that).
I know I messed up with what I said, but I’m trying to understand the realistic consequences here.
Has anyone experienced something similar or knows how CBP typically handles this?
Thanks in advance.
