Hi guys, I completed my application this weekend, and on Tuesday, I received an offer from the University of Sheffield for General Engineering (BEng).

I've been trying to get more information about the course, but I haven't really been satisfied with what I have found, so I was wondering if General engineering students, at Sheffield or in other universities, could answer the following questions:

  1. (Mostly for Sheffield students) How easy is it to transfer to another Engineering course upon starting General Engineering? Suppose I'd want to specialise before Y3, would it be possible to switch to Mechanical Engineering or similar?
  2. For students who are currently studying/studied general engineering, did you find the content to be too broad? Is a General Engineering degree (with specialisation) seen similarly to a standalone engineering course by employers? What career path have you taken (like what job are you hoping to get)? If you were to start university again, would you choose General Engineering, or would you prefer to go to a standalone engineering degree?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, I'm a British national currently living abroad (should be eligible for home fees under post-Brexit stuff). I applied quite late this cycle to a few UK engineering courses, and I'm trying to get a realistic sense of my chances.

I've applied to:

Surrey Aerospace Engineering
Surrey Mechanical Engineering
Exeter Engineering
Loughborough Mechanical Engineering
Sheffield General Engineering

Academically, I am a strong student, but since I've applied late, I'm quite pessimistic.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? If so, did you get any offers?
