For a long time I’ve been trying to figure out which Royal Knight corresponds to which Knight of the Round Table, knowing the Royal Knights are at least partially inspired by Arthurian legend.
Some of them are easier to speculate about. Alphamon has the “Empty Seat” motif, which immediately makes people think of the Siege Perilous/Galahad. Examon has very obvious Arthurian/Pendragon references with things like Pendragon’s Glory, Avalon’s Gate, and Caledfwlch. Imperialdramon Paladin Mode is also tied to the founding/origin of the Royal Knights, so there is definitely an Arthurian structure going on.
But Omegamon always confused me.
At first, it is tempting to see Omegamon as Arthur, Lancelot, or just “the strongest/main knight.” But I don’t think that fully explains what Omegamon actually represents. I think Omegamon may be closer to Merlin.
Here’s why.
Omegamon’s existence is basically miraculous. He is not just a regular knight who became strong through ordinary means. He is born from the fusion of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, and thematically from the will/prayers of those who desire good. That already makes him feel less like a normal warrior and more like a supernatural, almost mythic intervention.
He is also a perfect balance of opposites.
WarGreymon has the dragon/dinosaur, fire, sun, day, close-combat, heroic-warrior side.
MetalGarurumon has the wolf, ice, moon, night, ranged-combat, cold-calculation side.
Omegamon combines both into one white-armored being. White can represent purity, balance, neutrality, or divine/mystical presence. He is both sword and cannon, close range and long range, fire and ice, sun and moon, day and night. That feels very Merlin-like to me: not just a knight, but a figure who stands between opposing forces and channels them into order.
Then there is the Grey Sword. The runic-looking writing on the sword gives Omegamon a magical/ancient feeling. He is a knight visually, yes, but the way he is presented often feels more like a holy or magical being than a regular member of an order.
The strongest point for me is Imperialdramon Paladin Mode.
Imperialdramon Paladin Mode is connected to the origin/founding of the Royal Knights, but Paladin Mode is achieved when Imperialdramon Fighter Mode receives Omegamon’s power. That is extremely interesting.
If Imperialdramon Paladin Mode is the “founder” or Arthur-like figure of the Royal Knights, then Omegamon giving him power feels very similar to Merlin empowering or guiding Arthur. Merlin is not the king. Merlin is not exactly one of the knights. But Arthur’s rise and the entire structure around the Round Table would not exist in the same way without Merlin’s influence.
That also fits the age/timeline feeling. Merlin is older than Arthur and is connected even to the time of Arthur’s father, Uther. Likewise, if Imperialdramon Paladin Mode is tied to the origin of the Royal Knights but receives power from Omegamon, then Omegamon feels like a more ancient or more mystical force behind the founding legend.
Even the Omega Blade makes this more interesting. Imperialdramon Paladin Mode wields a blade named after Omega/Omegamon. That almost feels like Excalibur logic: the king/founder holds the sacred weapon, but the deeper mystical authority behind that weapon belongs to the Merlin-like figure.
Of course, I’m not saying this is official canon or that Bandai literally planned every Royal Knight as a one-to-one Arthurian counterpart. But symbolically, Omegamon as Merlin makes a lot more sense to me than Omegamon as simply Arthur or Lancelot.
He is not just “the strongest knight.” He is the miraculous, magical, balancing force that makes the founder’s legend possible.
