Not exactly sure how to ask this...

So, I've noticed that some people seem to really struggle with not pronouncing words phonetically, and continue to do so even after learning the correct pronunciation. An example would be something like pronouncing the name Giannis as jee-awn-us.

This is something I've seen my sister do throughout her life. Podcaster Bill Simmons does this, as well. Of course some people do these things for fun, but with the two examples I just provided, they both will try multiple times to say the word correctly and struggle. It's almost like there is a disconnect between how a word looks and their memory of how to pronounce the word.

In any case, I was just curious if anyone has some insight into what is happening here (assuming anything I said made sense!).
