I just wanted to report that I finally did my first competition! At the Twin Peaks rifle club range in Medicine Lodge, KS where they host the Box Canyon match in the early Spring, another group has began hosting what they call “Coyote Chaos” matches.
These matches are a very relaxed pace and great for beginners, they have coyote targets going out from 200 to a 1000 yards, and prey targets beside those coyotes from 500 yards on. They had us split up into seven squads and when your squad would be ready, everybody would post up either prone or on a bench underneath the awning and each person would individually engage the target when our name was called until everybody had engaged that certain target and then we should reset and engage the next further target out in the same fashion
I’ll include a picture of our match brief below so that it makes more sense. If you totally missed a certain yardage, you had a chance to buy back in to try the next yardage and so on. The prey targets from 500 on mentioned above were bonus points to help you climb higher in the match scorings, they weren’t required to be shot to continue on to the next yardage. Overall it was an awesome day to get out and I was fortunate to pull off 3rd overall and first in the open rifle division out of 54 shooters (47 adults and 7 youth)!
