*I'm in the process of aquiring citizenship by descent. My mum is a texan.
\Firstly, I know to many Americans this is going to be a questionable move. I spent 2 months in Texas last year with family, which isn't enough to provide a long term assessment of the realities of living there, but I'm not going in completely blind. I know of the turbulent political climate and the gun culture and the heat.
I'm looking for a change, mostly just to save money/improve job prospects - I'm not particularly there to improve my quality of life. I've never even seen more than £10k in my account.
I'm 28, have a degree in Audio Production and Business, which I gained while working in the film industry from 21-23 . I don't want to work in that field anymore.
I have extensive family in Houston and have the offer to live with them for a few years while I get on my feet. This could mean living rent free with a support system. I don't have that option in London and I've spent most of my 20s forking out extortionate rent (1100+) and barely have anything to show for it.
I'm currently completing a Msc in Big Data Analytics and Cloud Computing. However, my savings have ran dry and it might be another year before I can save enough to finish my masters.
My main priority is saving money and getting into lucrative work ideally within 5 years.
I have some entry level qualifications in AWS, Azure, the long term goal was to become a cloud engineer however I don't have extensive experience in IT im pretty much going in blind. I also know realistically IT is a sector that's already significantly affected by AI. All the IT support roles I'm applying for in the UK want like 2 years experience and have 200+ applicants. Even if it's the same situation in texas, I'll probably be competing with less people.
So I'm curious if any Houstonians could put me on any insights about work that is generally in demand. I'm open to going community college/training/starting from scratch and I'm willing to do the hard work.
I'm also open to picking up a trade, electrician, plumbing, hvac technician etc. I've also heard working in Oil or a nuclear plant is hard work but pay well, do you know if there are any roles that might be available to someone with a lack of experience ?
Especially any opportunities than might exist to do seasonal work, e.g work 6 weeks on 2 weeks off or work 6 months on then 6 months off type of work.
My work history Customer Service Jobs - 4 years - Film Industry 2 years - Junior Data Analyst - 1 year - Impact Manager for Charity - 1 year current
Why Houston ?
I have extensive family in Houston and have the offer to live with them for a few years while I get on my feet. This could mean living rent free with a support system. At the very least I could work for a year or two and get some more savings together. Currently it's extremely hard to save in London, to put any decent savings together.
Why move from London ?
I am currently on 30k in London. Unless you're on 70k in London it's almost unthinkable to live in decent accommodation, think about starting a family, you're competing with the entire country for any decent jobs, wages have been stagnant here for like 10 years, the average salary is like 40k in London and even lower in the rest of the UK. People here are a lot poorer than you think.
