People have gotten too comfortable bullying authors

I originally posted this on r/fanficition, but this was taken down by mods claiming I was inciting fandom drama, so I’ll post it here.

Hey so this isn’t even something I’ve found in my fics but I feel like recently readers and viewers have gotten way too comfortable bullying and excessively critique fanfic authors.

Ever since the HR fandom inflated ao3 and fanfic spaces, people’s expectations for the quality of fanfics have been through the roof. I’ve seen entire TikTok’s bashing a specific fanfiction that’s been very prevalent in a fandom I’m apart of.

I personally do not think this fanfic is my cup of tea and that’s FINE, but the way there’s been an entire hate train about how “awfully written” it is and “all the characters are ooc” and how it “doesn’t deserve the hype” has spiked with the influx of fanfic/ao3 users.

There’s even been TikToks of people promoting their work, and others in the comments comparing their fics to already established and popular fics.. which inherently is not bad but the motive behind it screams “oh this fics better, if you guys want something like this that’s actually good read this instead.”

I know as authors we post our work publicly for the viewers eye, and opinions and criticism are more than expected. But at the same time it’s sort of baffling to me how much people choose to forget that these authors are writing this stuff for FREE!

Taking time out of their days, spending days, weeks, months and years on a fanfic that they choose to write and indulge in.

Not every fanfic author is a writer, many choose to create content based off of fandoms that they’re apart of for their own personal interest and because that’s what they enjoy. If you have a huge problem with someone’s fic that you’re complaining in the comments every chapter you’re welcome to write your own fanfic!!

I know this is just a stupid rant but I wanted to complain about it and I hope I’m not alone in noticing this. Not just in ao3 comment sections but entire TikTok’s as well.

Hey everyone, I wanted to share something that happened recently!

I auditioned once for a movie that called me in for a table read and changed my character completely to do nudity. And I wasn’t comfortable with that. Since then I hadn’t gotten any callbacks from my auditions and it made me feel down, thinking maybe the production had only wanted me for my looks and my acting wasn’t worth anyone’s time….

Two months ago I auditioned for the lead of a major movie, and never heard anything back. It was a hugeeee production company, and I just forgot about it after that.

3 weeks ago I was called in to do a zoom audition, and I was so so soooo nervous but I thought it went pretty well?? 💗

Then, literally last week they called me in to do an in person callback with all of the execs, director, producers?!? This was something I’d never done before, and I was nervous out of my mindddd but I think I crushed it😭😭😭.

I know this is gonna sound stupid, but I’m not stuck up on getting the role. I’m just over the moon that I’ve gotten this far, when I was in the waiting room for the same role the other actor sitting across from me was a famous actor going out for the same role. I was so honored to even be in the same competition as this person.

I know this is probably not a big deal for any actors who have been doing this for a long time/have lots of credits, but it felt surreal for me!😖😖😖
