Just got a Sawyer Squeeze (SP129) a couple days ago and I’ve noticed that the quality isn’t exactly something I expected (it costs €65 or more here btw, roughly $70).
It could just as well bad luck but the injection moulding is not very great, ironically chinese trash things I sometimes buy from Ali are better (visually at least) than this (not by any means promoting buying there though!).
I keep reading that Sawyer is the best, but seeing this quality first hand I’m not really sure about it anymore.
I have a background in injection moulding and I know a bit about how those products are made in my country (Netherlands) and they definitely would not pass if they came out of the mould like that.
Just to name a couple examples:
- The thread of some of the parts were not filled up completely, potentially compromising how leakproof it is.
- There were membranes/flakes all over the product
- Similar to the flakes, the tiny holes on the sides had bits of plastic (membranes) sticking out of it.
- On the outside of the product there were spots/grime, potentially caused by heating issues, or simply dirty moulds
Now in my experience this usually means the whole batch has the same issues, so unlikely mine slipped through but a whole batch did, or even worse, it’s acceptable to Sawyer.
What’s odd to me is that I can’t find any other post, comment or google topic where someone notices the same, is it generally accepted as “it works regardless of the quality” or am I just unlucky with my purchase?
