Mask of soul quick review

Just completed mask of soul. It’s a very linear Metroidvania with fairly typical progression abilities that reward some back tracking. The map design is almost level based with no real complex interconnectivity.

Control and movement is above average. Art style is also strong with cool comic book cutscenes like nine sols. Boss fights are brutal on normal difficulty, especially the last 3. You have a parry and a dodge with i-frames later in the game but the parry is more effective because it builds up mana quickly which allows for highly effective power attacks. After defeating main bosses you get a new mask which will change your main and charge attacks and you can toggle between masks on the fly. The game also has a charm system that works pretty well and allows for multiple loadouts. There are a few fun and challenging platforming segments but I think there should have been a lot more.

The boss fights are where the game shines. 3-4 of them took many tries to defeat and have 2-3 phases. You don’t have a lot of health so every time you get hit it really counts while the bosses themselves are tanky as hell and require near perfect execution over a long period of time to conquer. The parry window is fair, similar to Solateria on normal difficulty.

Overall, for 8 bucks, I’d recommend this game to anyone who really likes tough rewarding boss fights and parry centric centric combat.

Final score 7.5/10
