Context: the summer of the cans (verão da lata) was an event that took place on the Brazilian coast from September 1987 to 1988 in which thousands of sealed cans containing cannabis washed ashore on the beaches of Brazil. In September 1987, after a confrontation with other drug traffickers, crew members of the Solana Star drug trafficking ship, which was heading toward the United States, had dumped 13,000 cans containing an estimated total of 22 tons of marijuana near the coast of Brazil. As news of the incident spread, Brazilians traveled to the coast in an attempt to retrieve a can containing marijuana. The beaches, already crowded with the arrival of summer, became busy with marijuana can searchers.

Context: Hezbollah originated from a Syrian–Iranian deal that allowed Tehran to deploy a 1,500-member Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) delegation in the form of religious scholars and military officials. The organization is widely credited with a series of attacks in the early 1980s against the Multinational Force in Lebanon (MNF), not long after which the MNF ceased to exist. Such incidents include the 1983 suicide bombings in Beirut which struck separate buildings housing MNF troops, killing 241 American soldiers and 58 French paratroopers.

Context: On July 19, 1982, David S. Dodge, the acting president of the American University of Beirut, was abducted from the American University of Beirut campus by pro-Iranian Shia extremists and later flown to a prison near Tehran. Hafez al-Assad, Syria's president, warned that he would expel the IRGC from Lebanon following Hezbollah's kidnapping of Dodge. Given the criticism Syria was receiving for its links to Hezbollah, the latter's tactics were badly received by both the Syrian government and the Amal movement, who had been working toward achieving favorable perception by world media and the United States. The Syrian government helped secure his release from Iran exactly one year after his abduction.
