I recently received two back-to-back emails that appear to have come from a well known hospital. They were the typical email you get whenever you change something on an account...e.g. "The email address/phone number associated with your account has been changed. If you did not initiate this change, please contact us." I've never even been to the state where this hospital is located, let alone been a patient or created a patient portal account with MyChart.
I did all the usual things...did not click on any link in the emails, googled the hospital, found that the contact info from the emails matched the contact info found on the site, etc.
I emailed the address that I found on the hospital's site (did not click any links) and got your typical service ticket created by a help desk response. But I got even more suspicious when their response was to ask me to call a number that matched the number I found on the hospital's site. They wanted me to verify my identity, which I found really odd since I am not a patient there and so they will not have anything to verify against.
I have no plans to call, but I am left wondering...IF this is some kind of scam, what is my risk level?? Again, I did not follow any links. I did not try to log into the portal (either through the email or via the Google search). I gave no personal information in the email I sent. There is no possibility that any of my personal information is associated with this patient portal, so what good would it do if they did gain access or create a new account under my email? Can I safely ignore this or do I need to pursue it and if so...how?
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer!
