Hear me out, what if the wallpaper is slightly toxic. What if it contains toxic color pigments like kings yellow or cadmium yellow and that it slowly poisons wanderers without proper protection.
About Marvin coughing though idk. Maybe he was breathing so hard from the running that he started coughing, but I don’t really know. It’s just a theory after all.
