Disclaimer: am a layperson with limited understanding of US laws who just got curious about a game I played, please be nice : )

I'm trying to understand the legality of a fictional scenario from the video game Indigo Prophecy. The game is set in NYC, so we can consider the laws of that state.

Video of the scenario: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EBZJb29E5s

The main character has incriminating evidence in his apartment. A police officer knocks on his door due to (minor and unrelated) noise complaints, and asks to take a look inside.

A couple of questions about the scenario:

  1. If the player does not open the door, the officer breaks down the door and forcefully enters the apartment. This has to be ludicrous, right?
  2. The player first allows the officer to enter and have a look. He then tells the officer to stop and not look inside one room. The officer pushes him aside and takes a look anyway. Isn't the resident full within his rights to tell the officer to leave, and the officer has no legal justification to continue the search?
