Disclaimer: am a layperson with limited understanding of US laws who just got curious about a game I played, please be nice : )
I'm trying to understand the legality of a fictional scenario from the video game Indigo Prophecy. The game is set in NYC, so we can consider the laws of that state.
Video of the scenario: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EBZJb29E5s
The main character has incriminating evidence in his apartment. A police officer knocks on his door due to (minor and unrelated) noise complaints, and asks to take a look inside.
A couple of questions about the scenario:
- If the player does not open the door, the officer breaks down the door and forcefully enters the apartment. This has to be ludicrous, right?
- The player first allows the officer to enter and have a look. He then tells the officer to stop and not look inside one room. The officer pushes him aside and takes a look anyway. Isn't the resident full within his rights to tell the officer to leave, and the officer has no legal justification to continue the search?
