5/11/1978 @ Springfield Civic Center: ‘The Mescaline Show’
48 years ago the band high-stepped into Springfield, Massachusetts and delivered a playfully raucous performance. Rumored to be under the influence of high quality mescaline this evening, the boisterous show was notable enough to earn itself a Dicks Picks release as the back half of offering number 25.
Coincidentally, a local photographer’s attempt to capture the evening’s shenanigans ended with the remarkable photo featured above. Unbeknownst to Henry, his camera experienced a mechanical glitch that resulted in every shot from the night’s roll superimposing over itself. The result: a singular image that captures the entirety of a Grateful Dead show. Mescaline-induced or not, the psychedelic nature of the photo is incredible.
