Got a local deal on a used VPL-VW295ES and want a sanity check before pulling the trigger.

Coming from an old 1080p Epson and looking for a real step up, but I'm also saving for a proper high-end setup in 2-3 years (laser, etc.), so I don't want to spend big now. The 295ES looks like a solid interim — native 4K, HDR10, IMAX Enhanced — but it was discontinued in 2022 and the market has moved on.

Setup: dedicated, fully blacked-out theater. Panasonic UB9000 → Anthem AVM70, so HDR tone mapping is handled upstream.

A few questions:

In a fully dark room, does the 295ES still look genuinely great in 2026, or does it feel dated vs. newer mid-range (XW5000ES, etc.)?

With the UB9000 doing HDR optimization, am I really missing much by not having dynamic tone mapping in the projector?

How badly does the lack of dynamic iris hurt black levels in a treated room?

If you were me: grab the 295ES, jump to an XW5000ES, or just wait?

Mostly movies...not really gaming.

Appreciate any input from folks who've actually lived with one.
