What to do about my brothers addiction
My brother (29) is unhoused and is now using meth daily, he was on crack for maybe a year, and recently switched to meth, which he swore he would never ever do. He is deteriorating fast… extremely paranoid, not sleeping, not eating. I know he has to hit whatever his bottom is, but intervention feels absolutely critical right now as he is still coherent, and besides the paranoia he is still himself mostly.
I’m debating having him assessed to be put on a psych hold. I do believe he is a danger to himself at this point, and there’s more than just drugs at play here. We’re predisposed to being bipolar, and I do think he needs to be evaluated for this.
My main concern is not knowing if the psych hold is a bad idea? I mean worst case is he gets out and doesn’t go to rehab and uses again, and we had our hopes up for nothing, or long shot but maybe he has a moment of clarity and can understand how bad it’s gotten and goes to rehab.
I know logically I need to let him choose to get sober himself and be there for him when he’s ready, but emotionally… I am desperate to help him.
