PhD at UQ – how do you actually find a responsive supervisor?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to apply for a PhD at the University of Queensland and I’m trying to understand how the supervisor search process works in practice.

My research interest is in thermal degradation and thermal stability of polymer composites, including material behavior at elevated temperatures and characterization techniques such as TGA and DSC.

I have a few questions and would really appreciate any advice from current or past PhD students:

How did you find and contact a suitable PhD supervisor in your field at UQ?

Are there professors or research groups working in polymer composites / thermal analysis who are generally responsive to prospective students?

What approach worked best for getting a reply (cold email, referrals, prior publications, etc.)?

What actually makes a PhD application email stand out in this field?

If emails are often ignored, what alternative approaches have worked in practice?

I’ve read the official process, but I’m trying to understand the real experience from students who’ve gone through it.

Any advice or personal experience would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
