Hi everyone,
I’m looking to pull the trigger on a living room 3.1 hybrid setup with a max budget of around £5,000. My goal is to recreate that "hyper-clean" liquid soundscape vision from the 2000s tech demos: pure clarity, holographic imaging, and excellent dynamics - but without the harsh headache-inducing sibilance or brittle-sounding highs that often come with "bright" systems.
Because this is a living room (25-30m² or 270-320ft²) system, it has to be a true hybrid system. I’ll be using it for 4K Blu-ray/TV, but I also want a stereo experience for music that doesn't feel like a compromise.
The current shopping basket:
- AVR: Marantz Cinema 50
- Currently £1,499
- Chosen for the HDAM musicality + 7.2.4 expandability
- L/R: KEF Q7 Meta
- Currently £1,399
- Choosing towers over bookshelves for the dedicated 3-way midrange, extra weight in 2-channel mode, and to tone-match the centre.
- Centre: KEF Q6 Meta
- Currently £649 (Usually £699)
- Wanted a 3-way centre to ensure dialogue clarity and tonal consistency with the Q7s.
- Sub: SVS SB-3000
- Currently £999 on Peter Tyson
- Sealed for transient speed/musicality, but still with enough cinematic rumble for LFE.
Logic & Setup Philosophy:
- 3-Way Consistency: I specifically chose the Q7/Q6 combo so that the entire front stage is 3-way. My logic is that this will provide a more seamless midrange transition during pans and better vocal body.
- Stereo 2.1 Mode: For "Album Time," I plan to run the Q7s in stereo 2.1 mode. By having dedicated mid/bass drivers, I'm hoping that it will deliver a better sound than, say, the Q3 Meta would with the centre channel off.
- Crossover & EQ: I’m planning a standard 80Hz crossover to offload the heavy lifting to the SVS. I'll be using Audyssey MultEQ XT32 to start, with separate presets and manual tweaks for "Cinema" or "Music" time.
Advice Needed:
- The "Glass Shatter" Effect: I want that 2000s "crystal" clarity but I am terrified of fatigue and harshness as mentioned earlier. Is the KEF Meta tech + Marantz combo enough to keep the highs "liquid" and smooth, or is there a better pairing for that specific sound?
- Dirac Live License: Is it worth the £300 upgrade on the Cinema 50 for a 3.1 setup? Specifically, will it help with the "holographic imaging" more than Audyssey? I'm fairly lazy so the idea of setting up a laptop and manually tweaking things as someone who's initiating this hobby discourages me.
- The Sub Gap: Since I’m prioritising music as much as movies, is the SB-3000 the "speed" king at this price point, or should I look at a REL (like the T(7/9)x) to get that disappearing sub-integration?
- Towers in 3.1: Am I overthinking the 3-way match? Would I get a more "liquid" soundstage by dropping to Q3 Metas and spending the savings on a higher-end AVR (like an Arcam) or better room treatment?
Appreciate any advice from those who have balanced the "Audiophile vs. Home Theatre" struggle!
