Hey everyone I moved to Berlin to pursue DJing and immerse myself in the techno scene. It's been a few months and I haven't had any gigs yet, which I'm fine with, I know this takes time.
I just got offered a slot at a club that's generally considered "mid" not disrespected by the scene, just not a prestigious or well-regarded venue. No serious techno heads would cringe at the name, it's just...average.
I talked to a DJ friend of mine who's more established, and he advised me to think carefully. His take is that early on you should be selective about where you play, because where you play shapes your reputation. He'd rather wait for a respected club or a good collective's event than play somewhere random.
I get his point, but I also have no other dates lined up right now. So my question is:
As a beginner with no gigs yet, is it a mistake to play a mid but scene-neutral venue? Does one gig like that actually affect your reputation, or is that more relevant once you're more established?
