Why does America have a prom date tradition?

This is not an attack, but a question out of curiosity. I grew up in an European country, where prom tradition was for family members to attend and watch a show organized by the students. Some students would have relationships and dance together, but there was nothing remotely like shown in American shows about panicking who you will got to prom with. Is it really that much drama in the USA? As someone who spent half of prom night crying after my crush ignored me, that would’ve made things worse if it was public humiliation to go to prom without a date.
