Advice for new readers

Hey everyone!
It’s so exciting that there is such a big community of tarot readers and learners here! I certainly wish I had found a group like this back when I had been learning!!

Going through feeds and questions relating to interpretation help, I have some thoughts for new readers that I think would really help them out—or I hope anyway 😅

  1. due to personal bias, when you’re first learning to read, (which I would count anyone in beginners from month 1 all the way to year 3 or so) the best people to read for are strangers, acquaintances or friends of friends—basically anybody that you don’t have emotional attachment or biases of. With groups like these, giving free or exchanged readings would probably be the best way to learn—especially with more experienced readers as they can provide feedback for your interpretation and how things are presenting in their lives. It helps you naturally attune your mind to connection with spirit and your deck/s over time and will fast track your ability to read without bias for your friends/family and ultimately yourself.

  2. using spreads!!! When first learning tarot, it can be challenging to connect with the necessary intuition to read cards without a spread. Even with years of practice, that can be difficult because many of the cards can talk about multiple things and certainly from various angles, so without specific placements, it can be challenging to identify what exactly the card is speaking to.

  3. specific questions are better than broad questions. Questions like “will we be together” are not very conducive for a number of reasons. This goes a little bit hand in hand with the spread suggestion, you will get clearer answer when you have clearer questions, and I would also say that pulling 5 cards for a single question isn’t helpful either as it can be difficult to tell what the other four cards are talking about in relation to the first card—it could be spirit identifying chronological happenings , spirit could be talking about various aspects of the situation, etc. if you are going to use multiple cards for one question, then I would suggest adding clarity questions in. Example “what is the likely outcome if this union is solidified” maybe Q receives 3 of Swords, the next question can be something like “what leads to this result” or “what can be learned in this experience” or “what’s the worst impact it will have on me”, etc—lots of directions you could go with the follow ups.

  4. the question you are asking is going to be addressed, but personal biases seems to impact many people because they are too intimately close to their own stories. I’ve seen MANY new readers have a clear question with a clear answer, that they then attribute an unconnected piece to in order to get an answer that better fits their preferred story—and that preferred story varies depending on the inner-world environment.

  5. speaking of inner world environment, please please please do NOT read tarot cards when you are in a heavily negative headspace. If your mind is clouded by negativity, then that is what you’re going to get out of reading as well. Spirit doesn’t have “feelings” in the way we animals do, so one reading can be interpreted in many different ways depending on your emotional state and will likely not serve your highest good if your present mindset is overwhelmed with depression, self hatred, anxiety, etc.

  6. astrology matters: whether you’re pulling for yourself or others, asking about yourself and/or others, you should always keep astrology in mind as tarot cards can sometimes talk about people and sometimes about energy. The Devil is a great example, sometimes it can be talking about (well multiple things hehe) the base energy, but other times it is identifying a Capricorn. And the court cards!!! Swords=air, cups= water, pentacles = earth, wand/rods = fire. Sometimes court cards are signifying entities and sometimes whatever the card energy is.

If you stayed to read all of this and want someone to practice on or wants some spreads to try out, I’m happy to help, feel free to reach out 🥰 wishing everyone the absolute best on their journeys!!! 💖🔮
