Persistence of "self" and level of awareness in the afterlife

I've been looking into the concept of afterlife a lot recently. Consciousness after death, NDEs, everything like that. One thing that people report is the absence of any sort of negative emotions or pain.

For some reason, I find that a little disturbing. Would that change in mindset not change a person a drastic amount? Are we simply unable to feel worry or sadness in the afterlife? I just can't help but think that inhibits the experience of 'existing' in the afterlife a little bit.

Experience with ghost in person/dream

My memory of this experience isn't the best as this happened a few years back and I'm only really remembering it now, but I figured I would post about it as I've been thinking over it pretty hard.

As I remember it starting, this was maybe seven or eight years back, and I was walking my dog home from school. As I left the school and passed the first house, my dog stopped and started to urinate on the lawn of said house. I was looking down disappointed at her before looking up at the house and I immediately locked eyes with a figure that basically nobody else was noticing.

The figure resembled a middle aged man about six foot tall with snow white skin and eyes that weren't entirely black, but had black irises and sclera. He had a black robe on and was either wearing a white shirt underneath, but it could have also just been a part of his skin.

The man locked eyes with me and smiled, then shook his head while smiling. He didn't make any moves past that, but I think the fact that nobody else walking down the street took notice of him was the part that unsettled me.

Anyway, I'm not exactly sure when the dream happened, but it was likely a week or two afterwards. I was in the middle of having a nightmare when I did that thing where you wake up in your bed still in the nightmare. I remember peeking my head out from under the covers (bad habit of sleeping completely under them) and the same man was staring over me. He leaned in close with the same smile from last time I saw him, then I woke up.

Was this my child brain being weird, or did I see some kind of spirit???
