Need help. Not sure how to move forward.

I recently joined a company and am on my second week. Before joining I submitted the background check and thought everything was good.

Yesterday I received an email from the background check company, asking for information to start my check. My company contract this to a company called Certn, my company is a UK based company and I work in the US.

The check compromises of a criminal, academic and employment. Submitted the criminal check and it came back within 15mins. Now the issue is with Employment and Academic. They asked for diploma picture, university employee contact, past job offers letters, document with end date and HR contact. This threw me off but I submitted my diploma with added water marks and job offer letters first pages with pay redacted.

Now the issue is that I got layed off from my last job, but told them I was still working there. I didn’t really lie. My prior HQ was moving and I was having loads of issues, so after back and forth with manager I got layed off. Got a severance to hold me over till I started this job. However now my current company is saying the background check takes weeks or months to complete. The Hr rep at my current company also said “You wouldn’t continue working here if something were to come up”. Which started making me feel uneasy, what if something goes wrong and my employment is terminated. One job, I got terminated from after they hired me not knowing I didn’t have the skills needed. The other two were lay offs. So I’m worried this might trigger something.

I accepted a second job offer which starts next Monday. The background check is from AssureHire and I expect it to be done(never had issues with American background check companies). The pay is also 5K more, but not full in office.

The question is, how do I navigate this? I can’t risk continuing to work here then get dropped. But this company is fully remote and I like it, even if the pay is lower. I want to talk to my manager and ask them to pause my employment till my check comes back compete. Is this doable? I like my current company, but I’d rather join the other company instead of living in limbo. My criminal check already came back complete and clean. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
