Looking for books that give off vibes like, “the sound and the fury”, “earthbound”, “yume nikki”, “the notebook”, “lucy in the sky with diamonds”, “eleanor Rigby”, “stranger things”. Something that feels like… those things.
As a game that gets tossed around as EarthBound-like, I’m trying to figure out what kind of “bad” YIIK actually is.
I’ve seen people absolutely tear into it, but that can mean a lot of different things. Is it bad in a “this is a mess, but there are still interesting ideas in here” way, or bad in a “this is actively frustrating to play and not worth the time” way?
For context, I don’t really bounce off things easily. I’ve enjoyed plenty of “bad” media before—stuff like The Last Jedi, where, even if it doesn’t work for a lot of people, there are still parts I can get something out of.
So I guess my real question is: as an EarthBound fan, is there anything in YIIK that makes it worth experiencing anyway, or is it the kind of game where the issues just outweigh everything else?
