Is Smash/Grow's auto mode just terrible, or am I missing something?

The auto feature is pretty convenient, because it can do things that I just can't because of the limitations of human reaction speed... but it's also the single most frustrating aspect of the game. Like, it's great for moving into positions that allow it to hit enemies while avoiding their attacks... but the situational awareness outside of that is nonexistent.

When a green dragon telegraphs that it's going to do the massive fire spread attack, the auto will just stand in the center of the AOE. When the current objective is to defeat a boss and there are thirty seconds left, no matter how you try to position your character, the auto is liable to pirouette off into a corner to attack archers that only ever shoot in a straight line and don't currently pose a threat.

It also just... doesn't take upgrades into account, at all. My thief's boomerang gives me Dark Sword of Damocles, and my priest's lance gives me Woosh Spheres. If I get the Poison Spheres blessing, that means that I now have things orbiting me that do wind damage, poison enemies, and make them targets for dark damage swords that appear on the final attack of a combo. That's pretty good for a single blessing! My mage's staff also gives me Crackerjack, which launches an AOE ice attack immediately surrounding me whenever I take damage. With all these things combined, it rewards an aggressive, up-close style of play... but the auto just isn't aware of any of this, and tends to stay as far away from enemies as possible at all times.

Worst of all are damage tiles. Did they seriously not program the AI for this thing to recognize that poison on the floor should be avoided? Not only will the auto run straight through them, it will even just stop and stand in the middle of a patch of poison to launch attacks.

I'll still use this feature when I'm in a situation where I need to launch attacks from a distance, and the battlefield is a wide open area... but I'm really questioning why they even included something like this when half the time, it genuinely does more harm than good

Spoilers for... I guess early-game? I hope?

I'd like to think that I'm still basically at the beginning of the game. I've been in Lumiose for all of a week; I only just learned about Rogue Mega Evolutions, which seems to be the game's main plot, and haven't even figured out what my character was coming to the city for in the first place. I've been assuming that the Z-A Royale is a big thing spanning the entire game... that eventually, promotion matches will require too many tickets for you to obtain in one night. Like, it would HAVE to work like that, the thing they named the game after only taking twenty-six days just seems silly.

...However. Vinnie is now saying that if I beat him, I'll automatically be promoted to rank F? What? Why would I want this? No, I don't want to skip literally half of the game, I just want to keep doing what I've been doing. It's not really going to cut the Royale down to, like, ten battles, is it?

Really loving the clothing options in this game compared to, like... any past Pokemon thing. I've been switching between an outfit for just running around the city during the day, and an outfit for participating in the Royale... but I feel like if I keep buying clothes, it's eventually going to get annoying trying to find the pieces I want.

Does the game ever give you the ability to create outfits that you can easily switch between, à la ACNH, or do I just have to be content that the game has clothes I actually want to buy?
