White floaters and black filters on RO system

White floaters and black filters on RO system

I've got a Watts under sink RO system that's about 6 months old and probably only has processed less than 100 gallons of water.

Last week I noticed small white floaters in the water that kind of looked like air bubbles but would eventually float to the top and make a very light film. This was hardly noticeable and I am the only one who noticed it.

Today I took the system apart to do an inspection and replace the final polishing filter. Inside each filter housing I noticed the same white floaters but they were much more abundant and also larger. A couple even looked like small pieces of white thread about 3/8" long.

I also noticed the filters are black. The first stage filter is completely black, second stage has black spots, and the 3rd stage looks ok. The membrane also looked ok.

What do we think? Biofilm? Even after just 6 months? I am on well water and have a UV sterilizer before the RO system. My water is fairly high in iron but the softener seems to remove most of it.

Thanks
