Another question to assist in my new pen hunt haha.

As I’ve said before, I’m on the hunt for a new pen. I at least narrowed it down to a gold nib, but the hunt continues. I’ve noticed almost the majority of FO users have a custom, and there’s a huge range of colors/different aspects of them. Can someone tell me what exactly makes them so special and so widely used? I’m assuming with ‘custom’, there’s got to be some sort of customization options…?

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question. For all the pens I’ve got, I’ve never tried or explored one of these.
