How to resign gracefully from a job I just started after receiving a better-aligned offer? [CAN-ON]

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on how to handle this professionally.

I recently started a new role at a large financial institution in Canada. The team has been welcoming, and I genuinely appreciate the opportunity. However, shortly after starting, another opportunity that I had been interviewing for came through. It is more closely aligned with my long-term career goals, offers broader exposure, and has a materially stronger compensation package.

I have only been in my current role for less than 3 weeks, so I know the timing is far from ideal. I do not want to burn bridges and create unnecessary disruption, and eventually end up being blacklisted, especially because the team hired me with a real business need in mind.

My questions are:

1.Should I resign immediately after I sign the written offer or should I wait until background checks are completed before giving notice? The two FIs use the same third party company to conduct background research.

2.Once I do resign, should I speak with my manager first before sending a formal resignation email?

3.How much detail should I provide? I want to be honest, but I also don’t want to overshare or make it sound like I’m criticizing the current role.

4.Is there anything I can do to make the transition as respectful and smooth as possible, given the short tenure?

Would appreciate advice from HR professionals, managers, or anyone who has handled something similar.
