

I'm in the midst of a remodel and there was a wall being removed that was stated as load bearing. It was my understanding that a beam would have to be placed here.
They built temp walls on either side of the double joist in the picture, spent several days cutting a 3 or foot section out, and then replaced it with what you see here. If this is load bearing, my brain can't comprehend how what they did can support the load. It looks as if now only one joist is supporting the load because of the gap/break in the joist they cut.
So yes, an inspector is coming. The contractor did not expect one to come since permitting is not required in my location for a job of this cost. When I told the contractor that an inspector is coming for some reason they stopped all worked.
In the meantime, I'd like to know what your opinion on this is?
