Pimax Crystal Super micro OLED. Headset powers itself off and back on again - my findings
There have been several reports, both here and on the discord, where users have reported the displays going blank and the loss of sound for about ten seconds.
This is not an issue with the screen timeout settings. If the headset turns off its displays due to the proximity sensor, or the headset is sitting motionless, the displays will turn themselves on within one second of moving the headset. What I'm talking about here is something different.
My system: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX5090, 64GB main memory, Windows 10, Nvidia driver 591.59, Pimax Play version 1.43.9.
Pimax Play image quality setting to custom and X 1.00, Eye tracking and foveated rendering not used for these tests.
I used MSFS 2020 for the tests.
With display brightness set to 100 within Pimax Play, within a forty minute flight, I lost both sound and the displays going blank for about 10 seconds. Basically the headset powers itself off and back on again.
With display brightness set to minimum within Pimax Play, .no issues during a whole five hour flight.
With display brightness set to 80 within Pimax Play, no issues during a two hour flight.
This is my second OLED optical engine, I had to return the first due to a faulty lens.
I never observed this powering off issue with my first OLED engine, probably because I never ran it above 80% brightness in order to try and extend the life of the displays.
Pimax intend to send me a second replacement OLED optical engine within 2-3 weeks.
The above may be of interest to others experiencing their displays going blank.
