I have a Synology DS1520+ with total 10TB of HDD. I use it as my home lab.

Three days ago I got a message "Volume 1 on XXXX has become read-only. It is possible that more files may be corrupted if this volume is still used. "

After a reboot, I got the message "Volume 1 on XXXX was in read-only mode, but it has been automatically repaired and is now healthy."

However, each night at 1AM, the read-only status would reappear. Rebooting fixed it a few times, but this morning the read-only status persists also after the reboot.

Storage Manager recommends delating and recreating the Volume.

Information:

- All disks and cache are healthy.

- Running on the latest DSM.

- I performed a memory test and reported no issues.

- I have a backup of all data and Synology configuration.

- There is nothing in the longs that indicate the origin of the issue.

- There are no tasks in the tasks scheduler at 1 AM.

- I can access the data on the NAS, but all packages are stopped.

I am considering the following alternatives:

  1. Buy a new DS1525+ and migrate the discs, assuming this is due to a hardware failure of the DS1520+

  2. Delete and recreate the volume, but this will be very time consuming for recreating all shares, docker packages...

  3. I have a free disk bay in the DS1520+. I could add a 8TB drive and create a new volume on that disc to do the migration and then recreate the main volume.

Do you have any recommendations on the best way to proceed?

Are there any other tests I can do to understand the origin of the read-only state? I don't want to spend money and time just to end up in the same situation.

Thanks for you help.
